The CocoNuts are a group of squirrely, passionate, and empathetic high schoolers based out of Coconino High School in Flagstaff, Arizona. Founded in 2008, the team has been dedicated to bringing STEM and the message of FIRST to the whole of Arizona. This mission is hard, but they have worked tirelessly to create and sustain programs and events throughout the state such as being the delivery orginization for FIRST Tech Challenge, creating the RezBotics program for the remote Navajo Reservation, and hosting the Arizona Advocacy Conference.
At the 2024 FIRST Robotics World Championships held in Houstson, Texas, the CocoNuts were honored as one of six finalists for the Impact Award. Following that, they won the Impact Award during the final matches of the competition inducting them into the FIRST Hall Of Fame.
Since 2021, they've hosted a successful STEM event at Killip Elementary, serving our diverse community. The event has drawn over 400 participants and featured 30 STEM organizations offering engaging activities for students.
Since 2022, they’ve hosted a vibrant STEM event at Leupp Elementary on the Navajo Reservation, attracting over 400 participants. The event featured 20 STEM organizations offering hands-on activities for students, promoting excitement and engagement in science and technology within the community.
Since 2021, they’ve conducted over 100 outreach events, workshops, and presentations, dedicating more than 2,700 hours to community engagement. Their efforts have reached over 47,000 people in person, highlighting their commitment to STEM education. We are proud to be recognized as the Flagstaff STEM City Partner of the Year for their impactful contributions!
The CocoNuts reflect a diverse membership, with 52% of their team comprising minority students, one-third being first-generation college students, and 43% identifying as female. This diversity enriches our community and fosters an inclusive environment in STEM.
Since 2021, AlumNuts have collectively received over $3 million in scholarships. They have secured internships with prestigious organizations such as the Student Association for STEM Advocacy, FUSD, Girls Who Code, NASA JPL, NAU Labs, and T-Gen. Their team has 13 STEM Students of the Year and 14 FIRST Dean’s List finalists, including one winner.
They maintain a 100% graduation rate, surpassing Coconino’s rate of 83%, and have achieved a 100% college acceptance rate. AlumNuts have gone on to attend renowned institutions, including Columbia, ASU, NAU, the University of Arizona, Embry-Riddle, UC San Diego, Stanford, and WPI since 2022.
